Premier League clubs sang God Save the King before kick-off to mark the coronation of King Charles III on Saturday. The clubs were encouraged to play the national anthem in a show of support for the King.
However, Liverpool fans booed as the anthem was played. Liverpool had confirmed their intention to play the anthem in a statement released on Friday. “Before kick-off and in recognition of the Premier League’s request to mark the coronation, players and officials will congregate around the center circle when the national anthem will be played”, read the statement.
“It is, of course, a personal choice how those at Anfield on Saturday mark this occasion and we know some supporters have strong views on it.”
The anthem could barely be heard over the boos of the fans as they chanted “Liverpool” instead. They also sang “You’ll Never Walk Alone” before the kick-off, and sang praises to their own King, Kenny Dalgish, while waving a banner of him.
King Charles III was crowned on Saturday May 6, alongside his wife Queen Camilla in historic celebrations. About 2,200 people, including the Royal Family, celebrities, religious leaders and heads of state were in attendance.
King Charles is the first British Monarch crowned in 70 years.
