Undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney retains crown on Saturday night at the MGM Grand, after winning the battle with Vasiliy Lomachenko in their 12-round lightweight fight.
Both fighters put on a stunning show until the final round, but Haney took home the win by points decision with the fight scored116-112, 115-113, and 115-113.
Although Lomachenko outpunched Haney in the latter round, the judges pronounced Haney the winner with a unanimous decision, leaving the crowd at the MGM Grand Garden Arena displeased.
Haney was happy with his win, but Lomachenko did not look happy. However, he refused to comment on the decision when speaking after the fight. He said “I think I showed I can be in the boxing and I’m in good shape. See you next time. I can’t talk about the result right now it’s just not a comfortable moment for me right now but thank you everyone who came.”
“Everything was in the rules. I thought he would be better, he’s a tough fighter but he’s not the pound-for-pound fighter.”
Showing their displeasure, the crowd booed Haney as he answers questions near the ring. Haney complimented Lomachenko saying “he is a future Hall-of-Famer and it was a blessing. I want to thank Allah for this.”
“He was my toughest opponent. He was very crafty. He turns it up in the championship rounds… This fight put me in the history books forever”, said Haney.
