Four children have been found alive in the Colombian jungle after 40 days of a plane crash. According to the Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, the rescue of the siblings aged thirteen, nine, four and one was “a joy for the whole country.”
The children reportedly went missing after a plane crash killed their mother and two pilots on May 1. They were rescued from by the Colombian military near the border between Colombia’s Caqueta and Guaviare provinces, close to where the plane had crashed.
The children has been airlifted to the Capital Bogota early on Saturday for medical treatment. The children had been flying with their mother in the Cessna 206 aircraft before the crash. They were flying to from Araracuara, in Amazonas province, to San Jose del Guaviare, when the aircraft issued a mayday alert due to engine failure.
The bodies of the three adults were found at the crash site, but the children were missing. A rescue was launched and search team was led into the jungle by items left behind by the children. The search team was joined by members of the Huitoto indigenous group, which the children is a part of.
Members of their community had hoped that their knowledge of fruits and jungle survival skills would give them a better chance of remaining alive. The children were all found together when the rescue team got to them.
