Following weeks of repairs to Calgary Bearspaw south feeder main, the City of Calgary officials have said they expect to lift water restrictions “sometime Sunday.”
“Filling the water main continues to go well and we expect to finish later today”, said the City on Thursday. “After filling is complete, we will perform testing to make sure water quality meets or exceeds all quality safety standards. This step will take approximately 24 hours.”
Once the safety of the water is confirmed, the system will be stabilized and the valves reconnected to the feeder main for larger water distribution. The City says it will close non-potable water pick up locations for commercial and residual use once water restrictions are lifted.
The Thursday update also stated that Alberta Health Services (AHS) is working with the City of Calgary and Alberta Environment & Protected Areas (EPA) to make sure that Calgary’s drinking water remains safe and meets or exceeds provincial and federal standards.
Officials say the early tests showed no contamination. However, officials continue to take water samples at different time and locations along the pipe to test for how clear the water is, residual chlorine and harmful bacteria.
“These samples will be tested at The City of Calgary’s Water Lab and reviewed by AHS and EPA”, says the update.
Dr. Franco Rizzuti, Medical Health Officer with AHS said, “The priority during the filling and testing stages is to ensure water is safe to consume, and there is no impact to public health prior to returning the feeder main to service.”
Water use across the city on Wednesday was 489 million litres, meaning the water usage is within a sustainable range.
