The Calgary Police Service (CPS) has alerted the public to a CPS badge that was stolen during a vehicle break-in at a hiking trailhead outside Canmore over the weekend.

In a statement posted on X, the police said “at approximately 2pm on Sunday, Dec. 3, 2023, an off-duty officer returned to their vehicle parked at the Yamnuska Trail Parking lot, to find the vehicle had been broken into and a number of items were missing, including a CPS badge.”

The police believes the car plundering happened between 11am and 2pm. The badge has regimental number #5296 engraved on it.

CPS have asked anyone with information about the theft or location of the badge to contact Canmore RCMP non-emergency number at 403-678-5516.

The police encouraged members of the public who are unsure of the validity of a police officer to ask for a visible identification with a photograph or call either 9-1-1 or the Calgary Police Service non-emergency number 403-266-1234, to confirm the officer’s identity.
