A 73-year-old man has been charged in connection of homicide that happened 47-years ago. The case was solved using DNA genealogy tech.

The man, identified as Ronald James Edwards, is charged with the killing of 16-year-old Pauline Brazeau in early January 1976. The man was arrested on Tuesday and charged with non-capital murder as defined by the Criminal Code at the time.

Pauline Brazeau was a single mother from Saskatchewan, who was last seen leaving a Calgary restaurant early in the morning. Her body was later found west of the city few hours after, in a rural area under the jurisdiction of the Cochrane RCMP.

An autopsy revealed her death was caused by homicide. The case was reportedly reopened in 2021 in, by Alberta RCMP and Calgary Police in an effort to re-analyze old cases using genetic genealogy.

“For the last 47 years, Pauline’s connection to Calgary has been at the forefront of our investigators’ minds and they worked closely with the RCMP to ensure her case remained a priority”, said Calgary Police Supt. Ryan Ayliffe.

The RCMP says they do not believe Brazeau knew Edwards personally and he is not being linked to any other homicide during that time.

Edwards remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 14.
