President Muhammadu Buhari, the President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, President of Togo, Faure Gnassingbe, Mahamat Deby of Chad, President of Senegal, Macky Sall, and Mohamed Bazoum of Niger are set to commission Africa’s largest 650,000 Barrels per Day Dangote Refinery.
President-Elect of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, will also attend the occasion while President Paul Kagame of Rwanda, will be presenting his goodwill message virtually.
The event, taking place today, Monday at Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, will also be attended by a host of ambassadors, governors and governors-elect, ministers, senators and captains of industries in Nigeria and abroad, global oil traders, and other dignitaries.
The refinery, owned by Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, covers a land area of approximately 2,635 hectares, which is seven times the size of Victoria Island. Presently, the refinery is the biggest in Africa and the biggest single-train in the world.
The refinery, according to fact sheet, is expected to meet 100% of the Nigerian requirement for all refined products as well as surplus for exportation. Report says the refinery will drive the promotion of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as over 50 countries in the trade bloc depend on imported refined petroleum products.
According to MOMAN, the refinery would reset the Nigerian oil and gas industry and permit Nigeria to optimize the benefits of its natural resources.
The factsheet stated that the refinery’s design “complies with World Bank, US EPA, European emission norms and Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) emission/effluent norms.”
