Brazil’s Supreme Court has lifted its ban on Elon Musk’s social media platform X, which was blocked for over a month due to a dispute over disinformation.
On Tuesday, Justice Alexandre de Moraes authorized immediate return of the platform’s activities following the settlement of over $5.2 million in fines and compliance with regulatory demands.
Initially, the ban was imposed due to X’s refusal to block profiles spreading misinformation about the 2022 Brazilian Presidential election. The Judge charged the country’s telecoms regulator, Anatel, with restoring service for over 20 million users within 24 hours.
Responding to the ruling, X expressed its satisfaction on its Global Government Affairs handle. The post read “X is proud to return to Brazil. Giving tens of millions of Brazilians access to our indispensable platform was paramount throughout this entire process. We will continue to defend freedom of speech, within the boundaries of the law, everywhere we operate.”
Meanwhile, as of the time of this report, Musk has yet to make any public comment regarding the matter.
