The Nimmons Residence located in Calgary’s Bankview neighborhood is being officially acknowledged by Heritage Calgary.
The residence has been moved from the spot where it was originally built 1898 to make way for an 84-unit apartment, but now the ranch house has a plaque to tell a bit of its history. The residence is now centered in a bustling part of the inner city.
Josh Traptow, Heritage Calgary’s Chief Executive explained that the Nimmons residence is “a great example of heritage being used as an asset to anchor with retail or commercial space, office space.”
The Nimmons residence was built by William Nimmons, rancher, owner of sandstone quarry, brickworks, and real estate business, Calgary. It was built with sandstone from the Nimmons quarry.
The residence has been moved four times to accommodate construction for an apartment building. Traptow said “I think more and more Calgarians are having more of an appreciation that heritage from an economic standpoint also makes sense: the greenest building is the one that already exists.”
