The federal government of Nigeria is planning to host an airshow in an effort to showcase the potential of the Nigerian aviation industry to the world.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, disclosed this during a press conference at his office in Abuja on Thursday. The airshow will reportedly be held in Lagos next year, 2025.
“We expect this to happen in the first quarter of 2025 and in subsequent briefings, we will announce the exact dates. But today is just to roll out the vision, let the world know that we are ready to roll on this massive program, and invite the world also to key into this great initiative”, Keyamo told the press.
He stated that the event will be used to position Nigeria as a central hub for aviation in Africa, attract investments, foster partnerships, and drive sustainable development across the continent.
“This groundbreaking event is the first of its kind in our nation, and it signifies a bold step forward – a new era for Nigeria and African aviation.”
He further reiterated, “We recognize our potentials as a nation. We recognize our geographical significance also. I have said it over and over in my different engagements, that God has just blessed Nigeria naturally in terms of location, that is good for aviation, both for transit passengers and other aviation activities.”
The Minister noted that Nigeria still faces challenges, however the event will help people see the country’s potentials. “That being said, we must acknowledge the challenges we have faced and continue to face”, he stated.
“Infrastructure limitations, constrained financing options, and the need for modernization have presented formidable barriers. Yet, our approach has been resolute. We are committed to strategic engagement, innovative policymaking, and infrastructure development.”
“Our airport concessions are part of this broader strategy to deliver world-class facilities and services that can support our ambition.” He added that the effect of the airshow would stimulate growth in various sectors such as trade, transport, tourism, cargo, defense and technology.
“By leveraging the aviation sector as an engine for economic advancement, we will not only create jobs but also improve our connectivity and elevate Nigeria’s profile on the global stage.”
The event will take place for three days in April 2025 and is themed “Redefining Aviation Industry through Investments and Global Engagements.” The airshow will feature static aircraft displays, exhibitions of cutting-edge aircraft technologies, conferences and so on.
