The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has given approval to a California startup to test world’s first electric car.
Alef Aeronautics, a US-based automotive and aviation company have gotten a Special Airworthiness Certification from the FAA, for its electric car, ‘Alef Model A’. It is the first of its kind approval for a flight-capable car, according to Alef Aeronautics.
A statement released by Alef says “The FAA is actively working on its policies for electrical vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicles, as well as governing interaction between eVOTLs and ground infrastructure. Alef’s Special Airworthiness Certificate therefore limits the locations and purpose for which Alef is permitted to fly.”
According to the company the car is “both road drivable on public roads and has vertical takeoff and landing capabilities.” The company says the Model A was unveiled in October 2022 and has since received strong pre-orders from individuals and companies. The car which is 100% electric is priced at $300,000, and will carry one or two occupants.
It will reportedly have a road-range of 200 miles and a flying range of 110 miles, according to Alef. The first delivery of the car is projected to be around the end of 2025.
Jim Dukhovny, CEO of Alef said in the statement “we’re excited to receive this certification from the FAA. It allows us to move closer to bringing people an environmentally friendly and faster commute, saving individuals and companies hours each week.”
“This is a one small step for planes, one giant step for cars”, Dukhovny added.
