The world’s first powered aircraft, known as the Wright Flyer, was designed and built by the Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur Wright.

The Wright Flyer was a biplane, featuring two sets of wings, one above the other. The aircraft had a wooden frame with fabric covering. It was designed with a 12-horsepower engine that the Wright brothers built themselves. The wingspan was approximately 12.3 meters (40 feet), and the aircraft weighed around 340 kilograms (750 pounds).

One of the most noteworthy contributions of the Wright brothers was their development of a three-axis control system. They could control the aircraft’s roll, pitch, and yaw, which made controlled flight possible.

The Wright Flyer made its first successful powered flight on December 17, 1903, in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, USA, covering a distance of roughly 36.5 meters in 12 seconds. The Wright brothers made several more flights that day, with the longest being piloted by Wilbur, covering 255.6 meters (852 feet) in 59 seconds.

The Wright Flyer’s successful flights marked the birth of modern aviation. Their innovations in control and aerodynamics paved the way for future advancements in aviation technology.

The original Wright Flyer is on display at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., where it remains a symbol of the outstanding accomplishments of Orville and Wilbur Wright in the field of aviation.
