The Calgary Police Service’s Traffic Section is investigating a downtown collision that left a pedestrian seriously injured on Thursday morning.

According to CPS News Release, at approximately 7:35am, on Thursday, Oct. 31, 2024, a collision occurred between a vehicle and a pedestrian at the intersection of Fifth Avenue S.E. and Third Avenue S.E.

Police believes a Tesla, driven by a man in his 60s, was travelling eastbound on Fifth Avenue S.E. and passed through the intersection on a green traffic signal. At the same time, a man in his 50s attempted to cross the intersection against the traffic signal, and was proceeding through the intersection outside of the marked crosswalk when he was hit by the vehicle.

The pedestrian was transported to the hospital in life-threatening condition. However, the driver remained at the scene and was uninjured. CPS says neither speed nor impairment are considered to be factors in the collision.

“Slowing down, driving cautiously, and being aware of surroundings are crucial for both drivers and pedestrians at all times. We are continuing to work with our community partners to help educate Calgarians on safe driving practices year-round”, Acting Inspector Andy Woodward of the Calgary Police Service Traffic Section was quoted in the news release.

CPS’ Traffic Section continues to investigate the incident and is asking anyone with information or dashcam footage related to the incident to call 403-266-1234 or drop anonymous tips on Crime Stoppers.
