Police have seized handguns, alongside over half a million dollars in drugs and cash after searching two homes in Calgary.
According to a news release by the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT)’s Calgary organized crime unit on Wednesday, the seizure was made on August 13, 2024. “Two homes and a vehicle were searched with help from the Calgary Police Service and RCMP.
Police believes one of the homes, located in the Beltline, was being used to process crack cocaine. The release stated that the drugs have an estimated value of $509, 000 and included: 2,447 grams of powder cocaine; 1, 597 grams of crack cocaine; 1, 444 grams of methamphetamine; and $36, 230 cash.
One out of the five handguns seized had been reported stolen and another has its serial number defaced, reads the release. “ALERT also seized a variety of ammunition, magazine, and suppressors.”
Police have now charged Huan Cao, 28, with possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking, possession of proceeds of crime, unauthorized possession of a firearm, unsafe storage of a firearm, tampering with a serial number and possession of a prohibited device.
ALERT says it began its investigation in May 2024 after “developing criminal intelligence on suspected drug dealers in the Calgary area.”
“There’s a clear risk to neighborhoods when drugs and firearms are present. ALERT works collaboratively with our partners to undermine these complex organized crime thefts”, said Sergeant Shelby Stewart, ALERT.
Anyone who suspects drug or gang activity in their community is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) anonymously.
