Democrats are drumming up support for Kamala Harris as their candidate for the US presidential seat, after Joe Biden quit the race.
President Joe Biden withdrew from the race on Sunday, after several calls to step aside since his television debate against Donald Trump. In a statement on X, Biden wrote “my fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”
“My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats – it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.”
According to BBC, the campaign now officially names Vice-President Kamala Harris as its candidate for president in the 2024 cycle, as stated in a letter sent to the Federal Election Commission.
Now that Biden has endorsed Harris, she has received praise and support in party circles. Reports state that donations to the Democratic Party have surged by millions of dollars since the endorsement.
The latest development means Harris would be the Democrats’ first Black woman and South Asian major presidential nominee in history.
“I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party – and unite our nation – to defeat Donald Trump”, said Harris. “We have 107 days until Election Day. Together, we will fight. And together we will win.”
Meanwhile, reacting to the news, Donald Trump told CNN “Crooked Joe Biden was not fit to run for President, and is certainly not fit to serve – And never was! Harris will be easier to beat than Joe Biden would have been.”
