Baby Gourmet foods has issued a recall for its Baby Gourmet Banana Raisin Oatmeal Organic Whole Grain Cereal. The product is to be removed from all stores and online retailers in Canada.
The recall is reportedly due to possible Cronobacter spp. Contamination. According to the Government of Canada, Cronobacter bacteria occurs naturally in the environment and can sometimes be found dry foods such as powdered milk and herbal teas.
Although rare, Cronobacter infections can be fatal for infants and serious in elderly people as well as people with weakened immune systems. The bacteria can cause serious or fatal infections to the blood stream, central nervous system and intestines especially in infants.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) says the recall was prompted by agency test results.
According to the company, no other products are affected by the recall and no incidents related to the product have been reported to date. “The safety of infants and children is Baby Gourmet’s top priority”, said Jen Carlson, co-founder of Baby Gourmet in its official statement.
The company says anyone who has purchased the product should immediately dispose of it or return to the location where it was purchased.
Symptoms of Cronobacter infection in infants may include fever, poor feeding, excessive crying, lack of energy and seizures. In people of all ages, the infection may cause urinary tract infections and wound infections.
