An assassination attempt was made on the life of the former US President, Donald Trump on Saturday during his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Trump and two others were injured and one person was killed before the Secret Service was able to shoot down the would-be killer.
The 20-year-old was identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks by the FBI as “the subject involved in the assassination attempt of Donald Trump.” According to the US Secret Service, the shooter “Fired multiple shots toward the stage from an elevated position outside the rally.”
The shooter’s voter-registration record showed that he was registered as a Republican, but he donated $15 to a progressive Political Action Committee in 2021. Crook was the resident of Bethel Park in Pennsylvania and graduated in 2022 from Bethel Park High School.
According to The Tribune-Review in western Pennsylvania he was awarded a $500 “star award” in the same year from the National Math and Science Initiative.
Crooks was positioned on the roof of a building around 130 yards from the stage where Donald Trump was giving his speech. Police are yet to identify the motive behind the shooting.
In an interview with New York Post, Donald Trump said he would have been dead from the assassination attempt. “I am not supposed to be here, I’m supposed to be dead”, he said. Trump was hit in the ear by the shooter and was left bloodied.
He told the Post that he would have been dead if he hadn’t titled his head slightly to the right to read a chart on illegal immigrants while speaking at the rally. He also commended the Secret Service agents for killing the shooter.
