With wildfire seasons getting more severe, the smoke in the air continues to thicken, causing air-quality to rise to a “very high” health risk.

According to forecasters with Environment and Climate Change Canada, the smoke most likely won’t clear for the next few days, although thickness might fluctuate, reports CBC. The dry, and windy weather continues to cause more wildfires.

Report says about 410,000 hectares were burned earlier in the month, but they have now increased to 728,000 hectares in the province. Weather experts say they expect more heat and more extreme fire seasons as climate continues to warm.

Speaking to CBC News, Terri Lang, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada said that smoke and air-quality conditions are likely to improve slightly on Thursday. However, the smoke may worsen again over the weekend as more fire continues to burn.

On Wednesday, the Calgary Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) was at 10+ which is very high risk. The AQHI reduced to 8 on Thursday, which is high risk. It is expected to come down to moderate risk by evening except *7 High risk in Smoke.
