World Environment Day is the United Nations day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment. It is led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
Celebrated annually, the day serves as a reminder that everyone has a role to play in protecting and conserving the environment. Also called Eco Day, Environment Day, and the World Environment Day (WED) was celebrated for the first time on 5 June, 1973.
Since inception, the platform has been for raising awareness on environmental issues as marine pollution, overpopulation, global warming, sustainable development and wildlife crime. WED is a global platform for public outreach, with participation from over 143 countries annually.
The WED theme for 2023 is “Solution to Plastic Pollution” with the hashtag #beatplasticpollution. The event is hosted by Cote d’Ivoire this year. It is a reminder that people’s actions on plastic pollution matters.
Plastic pollution is a major environmental problem as they alter the natural of the environment. Every year, tons of plastic waste end up in our oceans, landfills, and waterways, causing harm to wildlife, and leading to pollution.
To contribute to the celebration of the WED, reduce the use of plastics. Avoid indiscriminate dumping of refuse especially plastics. Also, help clear water bodies away from plastic pollutants.
