In the early 1800s, tomato ketchup was sold as medicine. It was believed that it contains pectin, lycopene and other nutrients which could cure ailments like Diarrhoea, indigestion and Jaundice. The idea was first proposed by Dr. John Cook Bennett, an American physician, who sold the recipe in form of “tomato pills.”
