Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced some new measures to appeal to cash-strapped Canadians.

The Trudeau-led government is cutting sales tax on a number of items including groceries, children’s clothes, alcohol and Christmas trees. Also, the government will be sending $250 Working Canadians Rebate to 18.7 million Canadians who worked in 2023 in early Spring 2025.

For two months, stating in December, the federal government plans to introduce a legislation in parliament that would “provide for a two-month Goods and Services Tax/Harmonized Sales Tax (GST/HST) break for groceries and holiday essentials.

“The government is proposing that the GST/HST be fully and temporarily relieved on holiday essentials, like groceries, restaurant meals, drinks, snacks, children’s clothing, and gifts, from December 14, 2024, to February 15, 2025”, says the government of Canada.

According to the government, this move will help provide an estimated $1.6 billion in federal tax relief. “Our government can’t set prices at the checkout but we can put more money in people’s pockets. That’s going to give people the relief they need. People are squeezed and we’re there to help,” said Trudeau.

The government figures stated that a family spending $2,000 on qualifying goods, they would realize GST savings of $100 over the two-month period.

The tax-free $250 rebate will be given to Canadians who earned up to $150,000 individual net income and have filed their 2023 tax return by December 31, 2024, are a resident of Canada on March 31, 2025, are not incarcerated for a period of at least 90 days immediately prior to April 1, 2025, and are not deceased on April 1, 2025.

The Working Canadian Rebate will be delivered in early Spring 2025 via direct deposit or cheque to Canadians who satisfy the eligibility requirements.
