Tony Awards 2023: Alex Newell and J. Harrison Ghee Make Historic Win for Non-Binary Actors

The actors are the first non-binary performers to win featured and lead acting categories.

Alex Newell and J. Harrison Ghee made history as the first non-binary identifying actors to win a category at the 2023 Tony Awards.

Harrison Ghee was named best actor in a leading role in a musical for Some Like it Hot, while Alex Newell won best featured actor in a musical for their role in Shucked.

“I have wanted this my entire life. And I thank each and every one of you in this room”, said Newell. “I should not be up here, as a queer non-binary fat Black little baby from Massachusetts” they added.

Other winners at the Tony Awards 2023 are Leopoldstadt and Kimberly Akimbo. The drama Leopoldstadt was named best play, the play’s director Patrick Marber, as well as actor Brandon Uranowitz also won making it a big night for Leopoldstadt.

Jodie Comer won the best actress in a leading role in a play for one-woman show Prima Facie.
