The legendary music producer and composer Quincy Jones had died at the age of 91.
According to the Associated Press, Jones’ publicist, Arnold Robinson said he died on Sunday, Nov. 3, at his home in Los Angeles surrounded by family at his home in Bel Air.
“Tonight, with full but broken hearts, we must share the news of our father and brother Quincy Jones’ passing. And although this is an incredible loss for our family, we celebrate the great life that he lived and know there will never be another like him”, the family said in a statement.
Jones was known as the producer of Michael Jackson’s Thriller Album. In a career that spanned over 70 years, Jones won 28 Grammy Awards out of 80 nomination. In 1992, he won a Grammy Legend Award.
In 1971, he became the first African American to be the musical director and conductor of the Academy Awards. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in the Ahmet Ertegun Award Category in 2013.
He also worked closely with Frank Sinatra. He produced and conducted the charity song “We Are The World”, a song that raised funds for victims of famine in Ethiopia in 1985.
Jones was married three times and has seven children. He is survived by Rashida Jones, Kidada Jones, Kenya Kinski-Jones, Quincy Jones III, Jolie Jones Levine, Martina Jones, and Rachel Jones.
Leading a tribute to the legend, Playwright Jeremy O’Harris wrote on X, “An Oscar for best score.
First black person nominated later twice in the same year. The producer of inarguably the biggest Albums of the 20th century. An ECOT. Father to some of pretty incredibly talented children as well and godfather to musicians around the world. RIP Quincy.”
Singer and Songwriter Victoria Monét wrote on X, “to one of my biggest inspirations! Quincy I love you so much!!! Your legacy will live on forever and ever. Heaven definitely got an upgrade with you.”
