Emmerdale and Coronation Street Star, Meg Johnson Dies of Dementia

The actress died aged 86.

Actress Margaret “Meg” Johnson, who starred in some of UK’s most popular soap operas have died at age 86.

The Emmerdale legend had been diagnosed with dementia, said her family. In a statement released by her family, talent agency Jorg Betts Associates and ITV she was described as a “kind and wonderful lady, full of warmth and always with a twinkle in her eye.”

The statement said the actress “passed away peacefully on Saturday evening surrounded by her family.” They said she battled dementia for the past few years, but “battled on professionally and personally regardless.”

“She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her”, the statement. The actresses’ death comes four months after the passing of her husband, Charles Foster.

Johnson made her Coronation Street debut in 1976 as Brenda Holden, before casting as Eunice Gee in 1981, a role she went on to play until 1999. In 2003, she was cast as Pearl Ladderbanks in the ITV Soap Opera, Emmerdale, a role she played until 2020.

Tributes have since poured in from fans and colleagues. Actress Gemma Oaten wrote “sending so much love to the @emmerdale family and family of the late and great Meg Johnson. A beautiful woman inside and out, who was always so kind to me during my #Emmerdale days. I’m sure Shirley, Freddie, Richard and Co will take good care of her up there RIP lovely Meg x.”

Actress Lisa Riley described her as “the true meaning of the words- wonderful woman.” She added “your energy lives on, because you were so very special. R.I.P Meg.”
