Over 60,000 Somali refugees have fled to Ethiopia amid a clash between regional government forces and local militias, said BBC. Report says 85 people have died and 400 wounded from the clash.
The UN said the refugees who left the Las Anod district of Somali are arriving in Ethiopia’s Doole Area. Majority of those refugees who are women, pregnant and lactating mothers as well as children, are sheltering in schools, open places and public buildings.
Last week the UN said that an average of 1,000 people were crossing into Ethiopia each day, fleeing from the killings, said BBC report. The organization said 185,000 people have been displaced and settled in 66 camps inside Somaliland.
The fights started in Las Anod when a local opposition politician, Abdifatah Abdullahi Abdi, was killed by unknown assassins, sparking anti-government protests all over the city.
The city where the refugees are fleeing were themselves hit by a severe drought affecting East Africa, after repeated failed rains. This has left the displaced people with limited sources of water and sanitation.
