Geologists have confirmed that a new ocean is being formed in Africa, causing the continent to split in half. The large crack in East Africa is said to be indication of the new split and ocean formation.
An international source discovered that the rift which is going as far as 35 miles appeared in the Ethiopian deserts of the Far region in 2005 and it may be the start of a sea. The researchers believe the split to be a result of the gliding plate tectonics.
Recent studies, published in the Journal Geophysical Research Letters, combines seismic data from the formation of the rift to demonstrate that it is fueled by processes that are similar to those at the ocean’s bottom.
The tectonic plates of Africa and Arabia meet in the desert, but they have gradually been splitting for 30 million years. Although the same motion has caused a split in the red sea, but it is only happening at a rate of a fraction of an inch per year.
Soon humanity may have two motherlands, Africa’s 54 nations may soon be divided as reported by the Geologists. A new study in the journal of nature found that the land separating eastern coastal countries from the rest of the continent are separating at a rate of 7 millimeters per year.
Nations like Zambia and Uganda will now have their coastlines. Scientists say that numerous presently active volcanoes along the river, including the Aloo Dalapila in Ethiopia and the Old Wenyolangai in Tanzania, gave them new insights into the process.
To be precise, Erta Ale Volcano in the afar region of Ethiopia has been erupting non-stop for over 50 years and the rotation against the clock of the Victoria microplate for the past two years.
