The Weeknd won four awards at the 2023 Juno Opening Night Awards, on Saturday in Edmonton. The Canadian superstar took home awards for Artist of Year, Songwriter of the Year, Pop Album of the Year for Dawn FM and Single of the Year for Sacrifice.
The ceremony was emceed Andrew Phung and CBC Music radio host Angeline Tetteh-Wayoe. Alberta pop singer Devon Cole, R&B singer Dylan Sinclair, post-classical piano icon Jean-Michel Blais and the Bearhead Sisters performed at the ceremony.
The Weeknd also won Artist of the Year in 2015, 2016, and 2021, making it the fourth time he will this year. He is also nominated for two more awards on the main Juno Awards on Monday 13. The 33-year-old @theweeknd superstar wasn’t in the room to receive the awards.
The ceremony also honored Tenille Townes, who won the Country Album of the Year for Masquerades. Speaking to CBC News, she said “I watched and just dreamed of how cool it could be to be a part of the show someday, so I’m feeling all the full-circle vibes.”
Others who won awards are Montreal singer-songwriter Reve and producer duo Banx and Ranx, said CBC News. Kairo McLean won the reggae recording of the Year, alongside Kirk Diamond and Finn for their track Reggae Party.
On March 13, actor Simu Liu, star of the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, will be hosting the Juno Awards.
Juno Awards are awards presented by the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences to recognize “outstanding” achievements in the music industry. It is usually seen as the Canadian equivalent of the Brit Awards or the Grammy Awards.
