The Canadian activist, identified as Casey ‘Ever’ Hatherly is facing criminal charge after storming the stage at this week’s Juno Awards and interrupting a speech by Avril Lavigne. Lavigne was presenting an award when Hatherly stormed the stage topless.
Hatherly said she is unapologetic about her public stunt. The 35-year-old protester was topless, wearing pasties to cover her nipples and had phrases for environmental causes such as “stop logging old growth now”, “save the green belt” and “land back” scribbled on her torso and arms.
She was removed by security and arrested at the ceremony which took place in Edmonton on Monday. Hatherly appeared in court on Wednesday on a charge of mischief. Speaking to the press outside the court she said is part of an environmental advocacy group called On To Ottawa.
She told the media that she interrupted the show to protest environmental issues including oil pipelines, the logging of old growth forests and development in the Ontario province.
“I low-key, in my hearts of hearts, hoped that she would be like ‘punk rock, girl power’, give me the mic or something. But I don’t think it could have gone any better”, she told the media. Lavigne swore at her instead and told her to get off the stage.
She further went on to say that she chose to be topless because people would click on a story about a topless protester than they would an environmental activist. However, Hatherly did not expect that she would be arrested and charged as she has protested this way before.
Hatherly is due back in court April 5.
