The government of Sweden has announced its plan to increase the financial support for immigrants choosing to return to their home voluntarily.
Starting 2026, immigrants who choose to return will be eligible for up to 350,000 Swedish Kronor ($34, 000), according to the right-wing government supported by the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats.
“We are in the midst of a paradigm shift in our migration policy”, said Migration Minister Johan Forsell at a Press Conference. Presently, immigrants can receive up to 10,000 Kronor per adult and 5,000 Kronor per child, with a family cap of 40,000 Kronor.
“The grant has been around since 1984, but it is relatively unknown, it is small and relatively few people use it” Ludvig Aspling of the Sweden Democrats told the press. Aspling stated that if more people were aware of the grant and its size was increased, then more would likely accept the offer.
Conservative Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, swore to counter immigration and crime after he came to power in 2022 with a minority coalition government supported up by the Sweden Democrats.
Since the 1990s, Sweden has welcomed many migrants from conflict-ridden countries like Yugoslavia, Syria, Afghanistan, Somalia, Iran and Iraq, but has faced challenges integrating them.
