United States received intelligence from a human source in recent weeks on a plot by Iran to try to assassinate Donald Trump, CNN reported on Tuesday. This intel according to CNN, led to Secret Service stepping up the security around him.
The report said there was no indication that Thomas Matthew Crooks, who tried to kill the former US President at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday was connected to the plot. The report also stated that a US national security official said the Secret Service and Trump campaign were notified of the threat before the rally on Saturday.
“Secret Service learned of the increased threat from this threat stream”, CNN quotes the official in the report. “NSC directly contacted USSS at a senior level to be absolutely sure they continued to track the latest reporting. USSS shared this information with the detail lead, and the Trump campaign was made aware of an evolving threat. In response to the increased threat, Secret Service surged resources and assets for the protection of former President Trump. All of this was in advance of Saturday.”
The report says the Trump’s campaign has been warned against holding rallies outdoors several times, as there were greater risks involved, but until recently, these had been general warnings. Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi told CNN that the agency recently “added protective resources and capabilities to the former president’s security detail.”
“We cannot comment on any specific threat stream, other than to say that the Secret Service takes threat seriously and responds accordingly”, Guglielmi told CNN.
Meanwhile, during an interview with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria, Iran’s acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani responded to the allegations. When asked if the assassination plot was in retaliation to General Soleinmani’s killing, which took place during the Trump administration, Kani said Iran would rather legal procedures concerning that.
“I told you explicitly that we would resort to legal and judicial procedures and framework at the domestic level and international level in order to bring the perpetrators and military advisers of General Soleimani’s assassination to justice”, said Kani.
