Eric R Holder Jr has been found guilty of the 2019 murder of Grammy-nominated hip hop artist, Airmiess Joseph Asghedom, known professionally as Nipsey Hussle.
The 33-year old rapper was shot dead outside the clothes shop he founded, the Marathon, in Los Angeles. Two bystanders were also hit and injured during the shooting.
Superior Court Judge H. Clay Jacke II handed a 60 years to life sentence to Holder on Wednesday. He was found guilty of murder as well as two counts of attempted voluntary manslaughter and two counts of assault with a firearm for gunfire that hit the two bystanders.
Judge Jacke sentenced Holder to 25 years to life for murder, 25 more for a firearm sentencing enhancement and an additional 10 years for assault with firearm convictions.
According to prosecutors, Holder and Hussle had a conversation in front of the clothing store, on the day he was shot. Holder shot Hussle at least 10 times, said the prosecutors. BBC report says Holder was not eligible for a death penalty and was widely expected to receive a life sentence.
Holder who was dressed in an orange jail attire did not react when his sentence was read out. Holder’s attorney Aaron Jansen, said he planned to appeal the verdict.
Hussle and Holder both grew up together in South Los Angeles, but Hussle achieved fame and success, going on to be a celebrated rapper, as opposed to Holder. Hussle won two posthumous Grammy Awards for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap/Song Collaboration in 2020.
He also got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
