New Education Curriculum to Begin in January 2025

The Nigerian Ministry of Education announced on Monday that a new education curriculum for Basic Education with a priority on skills will begin in January 2025.

The Minister of Education Professor Tahir Mamman announced this during a meeting with stakeholders on the implementation of the new curriculum in Abuja, Nigeria. The new curriculum will reportedly be mandatory for all public and private schools across the country, from Basic 3 to Junior Secondary School (JSS3).

According to Minister Mamman, 15 new courses have been introduced into the new curriculum to enhance the trade and skills of young Nigerian children in such a way that they would be ready for the job market. “Students will be exposed to everything from Primary to JSS3. Skills acquisition is no longer optional. When they finish school, they can go with at least two skills. It will solve problems of employment for children in Nigeria. It will equip students with 21st century skills. We do not expect out-of-school children anymore.”

Professor Mamman said the next three months will be used for the preparatory stage, including preparing teachers’ guides in using the curriculum.

Dr. Garba Gandu, Director of Curriculum at the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), stated that the curriculum includes 15 new trade subjects to enhance global competitiveness. The subjects cover areas such as basic digital literacy, vocational entrepreneurship, and practical skills like building and construction, plumbing, tiling, hairstyling, makeup, GSM repairs, satellite and CCTV installation, and garment making.
