Iconic Nigerian singer and actress, Onyeka Onwenu has reportedly passed away at the age of 72.
According to reports, she died on Tuesday, at the Reddington Hospital in Lagos, after slumping at the birthday party of the CEO of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, Mrs. Stella Okoli. An eyewitness at the party reportedly confirmed the news to TheNiche.
“It is very sad. Onyeka Onwenu just performed at the birthday of Mrs. Stella Okoli today (Tuesday, July 30, 2024), and after performing, she slumped. She was taken to Reddington Hospital and she couldn’t make it”, said the eyewitness.
Born January 1952, Onyeka Onwenu was a Nigerian singer/songwriter, actress, human rights and social activist, journalist, and politician. She was dubbed the “The Elegant Stallion”, by the Nigerian press.
She began her music career in the 1980s and has since released several albums, blending genres like highlife, pop and gospel. She will be fondly remembered for her powerful voice and alluring stage presence. Some of her popular albums are “For the Love of You”, “Endless Life” and “In the Morning Light.”
Asides music, Onwenu was a broadcasted for NTA and was a former member of the NTA board. She also starred in several films including Nightmare, Rising Moon, Half of a Yellow Sun and Lion Heart.
Onwenu served as the chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts. In 2013, she was appointed the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development.
Leading her Tribute, President Bola Tinubu, in a statement by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, sent his condolences to the family of the late singer. President Tinubu empathized with the entertainment industry, the Imo State Government, and the numerous fans of the deceased.
