Comedian Joe Lycett, livestreamed himself shredding £10,000 on Sunday over David Beckham’s role as ambassador for the Qatar world cup.
Initially, Lycett had issued an ultimatum for Beckham to cancel his deal with Qatar. He shared a video message addressing Beckham, in which he told the footballer that Qatar is “one of the worst places in the world to be gay”.
Saying that Qatar is “voted as one of the worst places in the world to be gay”. He gave Beckham an ultimatum to drop the deal with Qatar in support of LGBT people. He also mentioned that if Beckham didn’t cancel the deal, he would livestream himself shredding the money along with Beckham’s “status as gay icon”. Beckham did not respond to this.
In the video, which was livestreamed before the World Cup opening ceremony, Lycett was wearing a rainbow-colored ruffled top and headphones. He threw the cash into the shredder, remaining totally expressionless, then curtseyed and left.
This display has garnered mixed reactions with some in support of Lycett for raising awareness to Qatar’s human poor rights human rights record and illegalization of homosexuality, while others condemned the act. Those who condemned him said he should have donated the money to charity, rather than destroying it amidst the high cost of living.
Beckham is yet to make any public comment. @joelycett @davidbeckham
