Reality stars Todd and Julie Chrisley have been sentenced for bank fraud and tax evasion. They both received their sentences on Monday, with Todd sentenced to 12 years in prison, plus 16 months on probation and Julie sentenced to seven years in prison, with 16 months on probation.
Earlier this year, the couple were charged with inflating their net worth in order to secure more than $30 million in fraudulent loans. They were also guilty of having dodged taxes since as far back as 2009, as well as hiding their earnings from the IRS.
The prosecutors argued that the Chrisleys submitted fake documents to banks and also refused to pay back their loans by declaring bankruptcy. Whereas, they publicly flaunted their wealth on their show, “Chrisley Knows Best”.
Peter Tarinto, the couple’s accountant, was found guilty of conspiracy to defraud the IRS and was sentenced to three years in prison.
The prosecutors also argued that they submitted fake documents to a grand jury that was investigating them and convinced their family and friends to lie under oath during trial.
However, Todd’s lawyers said the government didn’t provide evidence of defrauding and the loss amount was miscalculated. Julie’s lawyers argued using her character.
