The European Union has given Facebook and Instagram parent, Meta a 24-hour ultimatum to remove pro-Hamas content across all its platforms.
According to the BBC, the EU warned Mark Zuckerberg over the spread of “disinformation”, on Meta’s social media platforms after Hama’s attack on Israel. It told Meta that it “has 24 hours” to respond and comply with European law, says the report.
In a letter to Zuckerberg, the EU’s industry chief, Thierry Breton warned that the “platform is being used to disseminate illegal content and disinformation in the EU.”
The letter reads in part, “this is particularly relevant when it comes to violent and terrorist content that appears to circulate on your platform. Your latest changes in public interest policies that occurred overnight left many European users uncertain.”
The BBC reports stated that the Breton told Meta it must prove it has taken “timely, diligent and objective action following notices of illegal content in the EU.”
A Meta spokesperson told the BBC “After the terrorist attacks by Hamas on Israel on Saturday, we quickly established a special operations centre staffed with experts, including fluent Hebrew and Arabic speakers, to closely monitor and respond to this rapidly evolving situation.”
“Our teams around the clock to keep our platforms safe, take action on content that violates our policies or local law, and coordinate with third-party fact checkers in the region to limit the spread of misinformation. We’ll continue this work as this conflict unfolds”, said the spokesperson.
The European Union sent a similar letter to X owner, Elon Musk on Tuesday, urging him to take quick action about the spread of illegal content on his platform.
