The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has rejected the three-year power transition plan proposed by Niger’s Junta.
The ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security, Abdel-Fatau Musa, disclosed this Sunday an interview with the BBC.
In an announcement made after meeting mediators from the West African regional bloc on Saturday, Gen Abdourahamane Tchiani had announced that the Niger’s Coup leaders will return power to civilian rule within three years.
The coup leader gave no details of the plan, noting that only the principles for the transition would be decided within 30 days at dialogue to be hosted by the coup leaders. He urged parties to “submit their vision for the transitions within 30 days” saying the Junta’s “ambition is not to confiscate power.”
“There’s availability for any dialogue, provided that it takes into account the aspirations of the people of Niger. However any intervention will open Pandora box and will not be a walk in the park”, said Tchiani.
Reacting to Tchiani’s proposal, Abdel-Fatau told BBC that “ECOWAS is not accepting any prolonged transition again in the region. They just have to get ready to handover in the shortest possible time.”
“The earlier they give power back to civilians and concentrate on their primary responsibility that is defending the territorial integrity of Niger, the better for them”, said Abdel-Fatau.
