Niger’s coup leaders have named ex-Minister of Economy and Finace, Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine as the new Prime Minister.
The Junta government made the announcement late on Monday on national television. According to the Nigerien media, Zeine was in the cabinet of then president Mamadou Tandja, who was ousted in 2010 and most recently worked as an economist for the African Development Bank in Chad.
This development is taking place in less than two weeks after the military coup that toppled President Mohamed Bazoum. Zeine is reportedly expected to lead consultations for the formation of a new government.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) had issued an ultimatum to reinstate President Bazoum, which expired over the weekend. The West African regional bloc had stated that measures could include force, otherwise.
Following the expiration of the ultimatum, the leaders of the ECOWAS member states will now meet in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja on Thursday to discuss how to proceed. “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and chairman of the authority of Heads of State and Government of the ECOWAS leaders will be considering and discussing the political situation and recent developments in Niger during the summit”, said ECOWAS in a statement.
