Calgary’s iconic landmark, Eau Claire Market to will close on May 31 and will be handed over to the City of Calgary on June 1st to make way for the constructions of the future Eau Claire Green Line LRT station.
In a Monday release by Harvard Developments, it was revealed that the Joey Eau Claire restaurant will continue to operate, along with a section of the south surface parking lot.
“The Closure marks the end of an era for Eau Claire Market, which has served as an eclectic hub for shopping, entertainment, and community events since its arrival in 1993. The addition of the future Green Line Station is expected to be a catalyst for the site; supporting Harvard Developments’ plan to transform it into a mixed-use, transit-oriented area that aligns with the growth strategy of Downtown Calgary”, says the release.
The demolition of the market is expected to begin in July and completed this Fall.
Speaking on the demolition, Eau Claire Market said on its social media page “It is with mixed emotions that we announce the coming closure of Eau Claire Market on Friday, May 31st 2024. Since the early 90s, Eau Claire Market has been more than just a shopping centre; it has been a free-spirited hub of flavours, culture, and memories for all who have visited.”
“As we prepare to bid farewell to Eau Claire Market, we look to the future with optimism and excitement. When one door closes, another opens, and we are excited to see a new chapter that holds tremendous opportunity for the revitalization and growth of downtown Calgary.”
A farewell party for the market has been planned for May 11.
