Alberta Health Services (AHS) has ordered the closure of some Calgary Halal food establishments on Monday as RCMP announced an investigation into unlawful livestock slaughter in Southern Alberta.
The closure order, which was issued on Friday, included five retail outlets and a food wholesaler and distribution warehouse. A catering business associated with one of the retailers was forced to close on Monday.
According to an RCMP news release, the investigation started in November and it involves a number of people, many rural locations and several city stores. “In the interest of public health, the RCMP have notified Alberta Health Services of seven stores which are subject of the ongoing investigation”, the release stated.
The businesses ordered to close are Shawdesi Bazaar, Shawdesi Foods & Catering, Bismillah Meat and Grocery, Mustafa Madani Halal Meat and Groceries, Maher Fresh Halal Meat and Cadalow Halal Meat/Alta Halal Meat.
AHS says owners have to provide AHS with evidence that all prepared, processed and displayed food they offer is from an approved source and provide a list of all food suppliers. AHS will also require a commitment from these facilities to obtain all meat and food from approved sources before closure orders are lifted.
The closure orders will remain in place, until a full food source investigation can be completed. To reopen, each facility must provide AHS with evidence that prepared, processed and displayed food is from an approved source and all list of suppliers must be provided, alongside a copy of receipts for meat products over the past three months.
