Oleksandr Usyk @usykaa defeats Tyson Fury @tysonfury by split decision to become the undisputed heavyweight boxing champion of the world.
Fury and Usyk fought at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Saturday night. Fury dominated the first half of the fight, but Usyk made a stirring comeback with an onslaught in the ninth round.
The scorecards read 115-112 and 114-113 in favor of Ukranian Usyk, with a third judge scoring 114-113 to Fury.
Usyk gained momentum as the fight progressed, with his superior footwork and methodical skill allowing him to dodge Fury’s powerful blows and land precise shots of his own. He floored Fury in the ninth round in a momentous moment during the fight.
The 37-year-old Ukranian is the first undisputed heavyweight champion of the world since Lennox Lewis 25 years ago. Usyk has now unified the WBA, WBO, IBF and WBC titles.
As for Fury, this is his first loss in a 16-year professional career. “I believe he won a few of the rounds, but I won the majority”, said Fury. “It was one of the daftest decisions in boxing. I’ll be back.”
“We will go back, rest up. I believe I won the fight but I’m not going to sit and cry and make excuses. We’ll run it again”, Fury said.
