Sudan’s Warring Factions Agree to 3-day Ceasefire

The ceasefire took effect at Midnight local time on Monday

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced on Monday that the warring sides in Sudan have agreed to a 3-day ceasefire.

Mr. Blinken said the 3-day ceasefire had been agreed between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) after “48 hours of intense negotiations.” At least 400 people have reportedly died in the war which began on April 15.

“During this period, the United States urges the SAF and RSF to immediately and fully uphold the ceasefire. To support a durable end to the fighting, the United States will coordinate with regional and international partners, and Sudanese civilian stakeholders, to assist in the creation of a committee to oversee the negotiation, conclusion, and implementation of a permanent cessation of hostilities and humanitarian arrangements in Sudan”, said Mr. Blinken in a statement.

Due to the war, residents of Khartoum are trapped inside their homes and food and water supplies are running low. Report says thousands of people including Sudan citizens have fled the country.

According to the reports by CNN, the RSF said in statement released on Monday that it agreed to the ceasefire in order to “open humanitarian corridors, facilitate the movement of citizens and residents, enable them to fulfil their needs, reach hospitals and safe areas, and evacuate diplomatic missions.”
