According to Canadian Immigration Minister, Sean Fraser, Canadians who need to renew their passports will be able to do so online, for the first time, beginning this fall. Fraser made the announcement during the unveiling of the new Canadian passport on Wednesday.
Applicants can easily apply online and upload all necessary documents and passport photo on a secure government website, said Fraser. However, those who are applying for new passports, including children, will still need to go through the traditional application process with Service Canada, reports the Canadian Press.
“The new passport has been redesigned from cover-to-cover with state-of-the-art security features and new artwork, maintaining its status as one of the most secure and universally accepted travel documents in the world for all Canadians”, said a new release by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.
According to the release, the new passport includes “state-of-the-art security features designed to keep Canadians’ identities safe, such as a polycarbonate data page- a technology similar to Canada’s driver’s license.”
The new design allows for passport holder’s personal information to be engraved instead of being printed with ink, making the data page more durable and resistant to damaging. The release reveals that the new design celebrates Canada’s heritage and identity with “iconic images of Canada’s natural beauty throughout the four seasons.”
The new passport will start rolling out later this summer, says the release. “Until then, the current passport remains secure and reliable, so Canadians with valid passports will only need to renew them when they are getting close to their normal renewal date.”
