Wayne Rooney Reacts to Birmingham Fans’ Boos Following Home Defeat

New Birmigham City manager, Wayne Rooney has responded, after he was booed by Birmingham’s fans following a 2-0 defeat to Hull City on Wednesday.

Rooney joined Birmingham earlier this month but the blues have lost both games since his appointment. Prior to Rooney’s arrival, Birmingham sat in sixth position in the championship, but have now slipped to 12th following consecutive defeats.

The fans had an angry outburst and Rooney was booed off the pitch after the match. In a postmatch news conference, Rooney said “That’s part of football. You need to win football games to change that. As I said yesterday, the former manager was very popular here and did a good job.”

In an exclusive interview with Sky Sports, he defended his methods, saying the style of play the club needs to win promotion from the Championship will be a gradual process. “We need to realize where we’re trying to go, not where we are now. That’s our aim, that’s our ambition and it’s what we’re hoping to achieve”, he said during the interview.

He told Sky Sports that “From my point of view, I want to move the club forward, and change the culture and identity of the club. If you look at the teams who get promoted, it’s the teams who play football… of course you want to change how you want to play, I’m very clear on that, but I don’t want to put someone completely out of their comfort zone.”

“…We just have to get a bit better more on game management that needs to improve a lot”, he told Sky Sports.

“I have to come up with up with a way that they [the players] are comfortable with playing whilst trying to implement how I want to play,” Rooney said at the postmatch news conference.
