Nigeria’s Falconets have advanced to the round of 16 in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after a powerful 4-0 victory over Venezuela in their final Group D match at the Estadio Olimpico Pascual Guerrero in Colombia on Saturday night.
Goals by Amina Bello, Chiamaka Owuchukwu, Flourish Sabastine and substitute Joy Igbokwe took the two-time silver medalists to the round of 16 of the tournament.
The Falconets, led by Chris Danjuma, had their second win from the three group-stage matches, earning them six points, the same as Germany.
In the match, Chiamaka Cristabel Okwuchuckwu assisted Aminat Bello to score the first goal in the 16th minute, before turning a goal scorer herself in the 28th minute. Flourish Sebastine added the third goal at the dying minutes of the first half, with Joy Igbokwe scoring the last goal to seal the team’s victory.
In Group D, Nigeria had defeated Korea Republic 1-0 before falling 1-3 to Germany.
The victory means Nigeria finished second on goal difference and head-to-head records in group D. The Falconets will now face the top team from Group E, either Japan or Austria, in the knockout stage on September 13.
