Thieves stole $30 million in cash from a cash storage facility in Los Angeles on Easter Sunday, in one of the biggest heist in the city’s history.
According to reports, the thieves broke through the roof of the facility and the act was not discovered until the following the day. There are scant leads regarding the culprits of the carefully planned crime.
The facility is in the Sylmar area of the San Fernando Valley and is used to store and handle cash from local businesses, police commander Elaine Morales told the press. Reports by Los Angeles times stated that the thieves were able to breach the building and safe where the money was stored, without triggering an alarm.
It wasn’t until Monday, when employees opened the vault, that the heist was discovered. The safe displayed no visible sign of forced entry.
The Los Angeles Police Department and FBI have launched a joint investigation into the incident. Local media suggests that the heist was done by a sophisticated crew of burglars. Only a few people were aware of the substantial amount reserved within the premises.
The amount stolen exceeds any previous theft from armored vehicles in the region, as reported by Los Angeles Times. The largest cash robbery in LA’s history occurred in September 1997 when $18.9 million was stolen from Dunbar Armored Inc. Six individuals, including a former employee, were eventually apprehended.
