Former President Donald Trump is reportedly safe following another apparent assassination attempt at his Florida golf course on Sunday afternoon.
“President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity. No further details at this time”, said Steven Cheung, a campaign spokesperson.
The suspect of the shooting has been identified by the US media as Ryan Wesley Routh. Routh, 58, was arrested after US Secret Service agents opened fire on a gunman carrying an AK-47 style rifle near the boundary of Trump’s golf course on Sunday.
According to BBC, “Secret Service agents spotted the barrel of a rifle poking through some bushes and opened fire at him.” The suspect reportedly ran out of the shrubbery he had been hiding in and escaped in a black car before the authorities tracked him down.
Law enforcement officials found a scope on the gun with two backpacks and a GoPro camera at the scene, reports BBC.
Several media reports described Routh as a construction worker previously working in North Carolina. Routh has always had opinions on politics including supporting Ukraine’s fight against the invasion launched by Russia. It remains unclear what Routh’s motive was.
The incident comes two months after the first assassination attempt on Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania.
“Nothing will slow me down. I will NEVER SURRENDER!” Trump wrote in an email to his supporters.
