The rollout of the new Alberta Acute Care agency which was slated for Fall has now been delayed until Spring.

In a press conference on Monday, Alberta Health Minister Adriana LaGrange announced that more time is needed to get the agency up and running. The new agency is part of the government’s efforts to overhaul the province’s health care system.

LaGrange said the agency will now begin operations by April 1, 2025.

“There’s a lot of work that has to be done. We’re going to take our time and make sure that we do things in a proper manner”, said LaGrange.

Hospitals under the care of Alberta Health Services and Covenant Health will answer to the new agency which will manage hospitals, emergency services and surgery care.

“The acute care system is complex and making sure we set the system up for success now and into the future is critical”, LaGrange said. The Agency will be introduced with a phased approach.

LaGrange says the province is working on a transition. Also, former AHS president Dr. Chris Eagle has been brought on as an “external special adviser.”

Under the new overhaul, AHS is to be replaced by four different agencies, namely Primary Care, Acute Care, Continuing Care and Mental Health and Addiction.

Acute Care Alberta will be responsible for the delivery of hospital care, urgent care centers, cancer care, and emergency medical services.
