A Calgary man has been arrested and charged following an incident that resulted in a police officer being shot. The man was also charged in connection to an earlier shooting in September, says the police.
According to the police, at approximately 2:45 p.m., on Saturday Sept. 30, 2023, a driver called to report a shooting involving two vehicles, that occurred on westbound Glenmore Trail, near 37 Street S.W. both vehicles fled the scene prior to police arrival and no injuries were reported.
Thirty minutes later, police received reports of another shooting at a residence located in the 100 block of Seton Passage S.E. A man was shot while parking his vehicle and was transported to the hospital in serious condition.
The police believes that the suspect fired multiple rounds during the shooting in Seton, with stray bullets striking four surrounding residences, before fleeing in a stolen vehicle. Further investigation revealed that both shootings were connected, and police were able to identify suspects, who they believe were connected to rival crime groups who targeted the victim.
On Wednesday afternoon, while attempting to arrest two suspects, gunfire was exchanged resulting in a police officer hospitalized and another suspect dead. The shooting occurred at around 2:40 pm in the 5700 block of Falsbridge Drive N.E.
“A second suspect was taken into custody, and upon his arrest, officers located a loaded handgun in his possession”, the police said. On Thursday, the police executed a search warrant on the suspect’s vehicle, resulting in the seizure of two additional loaded handguns.
The Calgary man, identified as Thanh Nguyen, 25, has been charged with one count each of attempted murder, discharge a firearm with intent, possession of stolen property over $5,000, unlawful possession of a firearm in a vehicle, unlawful possession of a restricted firearm with ammunition.
Possession of a weapon obtained by crime and possession of a restricted firearm contrary to a prohibition order. Nguyen is set to appear in court on Oct. 27, 2023.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) continues to investigate the officer-involved shooting.
