The diversion caused by a massive sinkhole has now ended according to officials. An update by the Town of Banff says the “detour through has now ended.”
The update reads “Thanks to Parks Canada and contractor crews, the detour through town has ended and eastbound traffic on the TransCanada Highway will use a westbound lane to avoid the discovered sinkhole.”
Drivers are advised to drive slowly and extreme caution.
Early on Thursday, the Town of Banff had announced a sinkhole in the eastbound lane which was assessed at 7 metres long and 2 metres wide. The sinkhole had reportedly formed between the Norquay Road exit and the Compound Road entrance to the town’s industrial district.
The town had said all eastbound traffic was being detoured at Norquay Rd into town, left at Railway Ave., down Elk Street to Banff Avenue and north back to the Highway.
The cause of the sinkhole is yet to be confirmed. However, the Town of Banff says “timing of permanent repairs unknown pending detailed examination.”
